World Book and Copyright Day
World Book and Copyright Day is an event that is celebrated on the 23rd of April every year. The purpose of this day is to celebrate and promote the enjoyment of books and reading. According to online sources, the original idea was conceived in 1922 by Vicente Clavel to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes and boost book sales. This act has now been celebrated and embraced by international organizations since then.
Some of the objectives of World Book and Copyright Day is to encourage global participation through events, campaigns and poetry discussions. As well as to highlight the importance of promoting reading for leisure, offering an opportunity for everyone to have a book to read of their own.
Books allow us to learn and to keep ourselves informed. They also offer entertainment and help people understand the world and their surroundings. For books to be able to unleash their full potential, it is essential that they reflect the linguistic diversity of our world.
Copyright is a form of intellectual property law that protects original works of authorship including literary, dramatic, musical and artistic work. Authors must take pride in their work and always ensure its preservation and protection.
Book lovers and book club members can participate in World Book and Copyright Day by performing literary activities such as:
- Reading sessions
- Author visits
- Book discussions
- Poetry recitation
- Book writing workshops
- Book launches
- Book reviews
- Library visits
- Book club sessions
We as the Literary Outreach Incubation Programme pride ourselves by being active members in the literary space. We provide a solution to encourage and promote reading and embrace literary in all its forms. Knowledge and information are essential to the development of mankind. It starts by igniting imagination in different age groups across the society and encouraging creativity. We are themed towards a knowledgeable society and work with different community structures that support literary.
We acknowledge and celebrate World Book and Copyright Day with all our established book clubs across all 9 Provinces of South Africa; including the celebration of all 12 official indigenous languages.
Reading is a gift. It is important to share it with those around us and beyond.
Happy World Book and Copyright Day 2025!!!
